From Local DIY Blog to International Search Authority
The Challenge
Where DIYPete stood before working with our team
Pete had spent years building one of the most trusted DIY woodworking blogs on the internet. His project guides - from shed shelving systems to custom Murphy beds - were genuinely helpful, packed with photos, and written by someone who clearly knew what he was talking about. The content was there. The audience was there. But Google was not sending nearly enough traffic to match the quality of the work.
The root problem was not a lack of content or authority. It was a structural SEO gap. Over the years, the site had grown organically without a dedicated search strategy. Pages competed with each other for the same keywords. Internal links were scattered and inconsistent. Meta tags were either missing or duplicated across dozens of posts. Google was confused about which pages to rank, and as a result, many of Pete's best guides were buried on page three or beyond.
On top of that, the site had almost zero international visibility. Despite creating content that was equally relevant to DIY enthusiasts in Canada, the UK, and Australia, nearly all search traffic was limited to a small slice of US queries. The potential was massive, but the technical foundation needed serious work before that potential could be unlocked.
Pete came to us with a simple question: "I know my content is good. Why is nobody finding it?" That question became the starting point for everything we did next.
Before Adfix
Our Solution
A four-phase methodology applied specifically to DIYPete
Technical Audit & Cleanup
We ran a full crawl of the site and identified over 140 technical issues holding back performance. Duplicate meta tags, orphaned pages, broken internal links, and missing structured data were all addressed in the first three weeks. We also fixed page speed issues on the top 20 guides that accounted for most of the existing traffic.
Keyword Clustering & Mapping
Instead of targeting individual keywords, we grouped related search terms into topic clusters. Each cluster was mapped to a primary page with supporting internal links. This eliminated keyword cannibalization and gave Google a clear signal about which page should rank for each topic. We identified 45+ high-potential clusters across woodworking, shed construction, and home improvement categories.
Content Refresh & Optimization
We updated the top 30 existing guides with improved headings, better keyword placement, FAQ sections, and enhanced image alt text. No content was rewritten from scratch - we worked with Pete's authentic voice and simply made each piece more discoverable. This approach preserved the trust and personality that readers loved while making the content more visible to search engines.
International Expansion
With the technical foundation solid and content optimized, we expanded the targeting to include Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. This involved adjusting content signals for regional search behavior and monitoring performance across each market. Within three months, international traffic grew from under 5% to over 28% of total organic clicks.
Key Takeaways
What we learned from scaling a content-first website
Fix the foundation before chasing new content
DIYPete already had hundreds of great articles. The problem was not a content gap - it was a technical gap. Fixing crawlability, internal linking, and meta tags unlocked more traffic than any new blog post could have.
Keyword clustering beats keyword stuffing every time
By grouping related terms into clusters and mapping each to a single authority page, we stopped pages from competing with each other and gave Google clear ranking signals.
Your existing content is your biggest SEO asset
We did not rewrite Pete's guides. We optimized them. Preserving the original voice while improving discoverability is faster, cheaper, and more authentic than starting from scratch.
International traffic is often hiding in plain sight
DIYPete's content was relevant to English-speaking audiences worldwide, but the site was only visible in a fraction of US searches. A few targeted adjustments opened up entirely new markets without creating any new pages.
Data should drive every decision
Every optimization we made was based on Google Search Console data, not guesswork. We tracked clicks, impressions, and position changes weekly to know exactly what was working and what needed adjustment.
"Working with Adfix completely changed how we think about SEO. We had years of great content sitting on pages that nobody could find through Google. Their team fixed the technical issues, reorganized our keyword strategy, and within six months we were getting millions of impressions. The results speak for themselves."
